CHAPTER NINETEEN

Tysa sat across from Khaly. They hadn’t said a word for the twenty minutes she’d been there. Khaly studied the little woman, but there wasn’t much to her. Nothing alerted her to danger, aside from the fact she was strapped down to a chair with her hands bound behind her back.

“You’re not much to look at,” Tysa said. “I’ve heard of Dragon Elementals; they’re almost extinct, I understand. Only a few are born every so many generations, and most don’t even know they’re Dragon Elementals. It’s quite strenuous on a person to learn one gift, but to learn all five could be deadly. Rumors have it you’ve only mastered one. You’re really nothing without those dragons of yours, if I were to believe those rumors as well.”

“I’ve been taught to never trust a rumor. I have no idea what you’re talking about. What dragons?”

“That’s how you want to play it?” Tysa laughed. “All right then. What can you tell me about these?” She held up two books.

“My mother’s journals? Where did you get those?”

“Journals? Really? That’s all you think they are?” She opened one of the larger ones. “I don’t know this language, haven’t seen it before. But now, knowing who they belonged to, I’d have to say it’s ancient Nylm. Hettie was a clever woman. She was…wily. She had some pretty good tricks up her sleeves.”

Khaly ground her teeth, not wanting to say too much.

“Hettie Barinarin…or, I guess, Hamons now.” A sly smile spread across her lips. “Or rather was.”

Khaly glared at Tysa. If her hands were free she was certain she could call upon her gifts.

“Anyways,” Tysa continued. “She was a traitor to your kind, a spy for the Guild.”

“You lie!”

Khaly’s outburst didn’t seem to faze Tysa, rather it urged her on. “I’m sure it’s all right here.” She thumbed through the journal in her hand. “Tell me, do you speak ancient Nylm? I know they used to teach it in the early school years.”

“I don’t know,” Khaly glared at her. “What do your rumors tell you?”

She raised her eyebrows, a smile following. “So you do then.”

Khaly lifted her chin in defiance, refusing to say anything further.

“You can keep your mouth shut all you like, but I’ll get the information from you.” She closed the book and placed it on her lap.

It was ten minutes before either of them made another sound. Khaly kept trying to wiggle her hands free of the bindings, but they were too tight. The door opened and a man entered. With his back to Khaly he spoke into Tysa’s ear. Her eyes seemed to light up with each word. The man then straightened and promptly left the room.

“I’ve got interesting news,” Tysa said. “It seems Bancroft has given us what we need, and we’ll have those dragons of yours in no time.”

Khaly knew it wasn’t true; she was fishing to get information. She knew Bancroft would never betray them.

“Why don’t you save us some time and tell us how you brought them to life.
