Don’t look at these sample menus as rules, just suggestions to get your creativity going. Like passion, food shouldn’t come with rigid regulations. Go with what feels right, and trust your instincts.

I SAUNTERED UP TO THE BAR, aware of a little swivel to my hips that hadn’t been there when I’d walked into the restaurant. As I approached, Dylan’s eyes met mine in the mirrored paneling behind Lewis. Instead of looking away as I had on previous occasions when Dylan had caught me staring, I deliberately held his gaze, letting the corner of my mouth lift in a suggestive smile.

He choked on whatever rich amber liquor he’d been drinking, and I felt cheerfully vindicated for the night we’d first met, when my own soft drink hadn’t gone down the right way.

Lewis grinned in greeting, looking dapper in his tuxedo shirt. “Hey, beautiful. You coming back anytime soon?”

“Afraid not.” I didn’t add that I wasn’t planning to come back at all, but I saw Lewis’s slight nod and thought he understood.

“Well, can I get you a drink for the road?”

We’d come here in Dylan’s vehicle, which was a lot nicer than mine. One strong drink wouldn’t hurt anything, and I was in a daring mood. “Tequila shot, please.”

If Lewis was surprised that I’d ordered something other than my customary wine, he didn’t show it. He shoved a glass across the shiny black counter, a wedge of lemon breaking the perfect circle of salt on the rim. “A toast to our resident author. Congratulations, and good luck on all your future endeavors—books and otherwise.”

Dylan and I toasted, then Lewis excused himself, mumbling about needing something from the storeroom.

“The staff obviously adores you,” Dylan said, as the bartender made himself scarce.

“Yeah. I’ll miss them.”

His eyebrows shot up. “Aren’t you coming back after the tour?”

“That was the plan.” I lifted myself up onto the swivel-stool next to Dylan’s. “But, you know, I think I’m ready to move on.”

“You’ve outgrown what they have to offer.” He shot a questioning glance to the other side of the room, where Trevor’s office door was closed, making it clear that he wasn’t talking about just the job.

“Oooh yeah. You know you made him see red?” Positively Bordeaux, if I knew Trevor. I wondered if he would have decided so quickly he needed me back if he hadn’t been under the impression he was losing me to someone else. “He thinks there’s something between us.”

“And did you confirm that?” he asked.

“No. I wasn’t going to lie just to make him feel bad, but it didn’t matter. He’d already drawn his own conclusions.”

Dylan nodded. “What people see means everything, even more than the truth sometimes.”

I lifted my tequila, licking the salt away and tilting my head straight back to let the sharp, fiery liquor burn down my throat. Then I slid the lemon between my lips, sucking gently on the cool citrus. Finished, I set the shot glass down and glanced at my companion. “And what do you see? When you look at me, I mean? Just a client?”

He swallowed.
