Eighteen

The social worker eyeing us suspiciously from the other side of the beat-up table in the cramped coffee shop was neither of the extremes we’d imagined.

Her short, curly hair framed a face that had witnessed more than I wanted to picture. She glared at us with steely eyes that dared us to question her authority or try to pull one over on her. I couldn’t pinpoint her age, but whatever it was, I knew it was younger than she appeared. She didn’t look tired, like she hadn’t slept well the night before. She looked tired, like she hadn’t slept well since her first day of work.

“Thank you so much for meeting us, Ms. Wexler,” I said with a hesitant smile. “I know this is a little unconventional.”

The social worker, Mara—you can call me Ms. Wexler—Wexler stared down her nose at me. The impatience rolling off of her in waves made my palms sweat.

“I’m here because my supervisor told me I needed to come. I have no idea what this is about, and there are many places I should be rather than here.” She looked pointedly at her watch. “So, if we could move this along…” The arch of her eyebrow and the way she let her sentence trail away were more effective than if she’d said something threatening.

I gulped. “Of course. Again, we’re so sorry to be taking up some of your valuable time. We have a bit of an unusual situation we believe you might be able to help us sort out.” I nudged Tybalt with my toe, and he pulled three folded pages out of his back pocket.

He did what he could to smooth out the pictures we’d printed in the shop earlier and pushed them toward the social worker. The woman barely glanced at them before shooting us a suspicious look.

“Who are you?” There was no doubt in my mind she’d be up and out the door in an instant if she didn’t like my answer.

“My name is Juliette Matthews. This is Tybalt Cabot, my…” I hesitated and said ‘friend,’ as Tybalt said ‘coworker.’ “Coworker,” I amended, as Tybalt said ‘friend.’

Ms. Wexler’s expression didn’t change. “And who exactly are you to me? Or rather, to my supervisor, who told me I didn’t have a choice about coming here tonight.”

Tybalt leaned forward slightly, but I spoke up before he could open his mouth. Ms. Wexler didn’t strike me as the type of person who would take well to being strong-armed by someone throwing influence around.

“As I said, we’re in a bit of a strange situation. We’re looking for a little girl.” When her eyes narrowed, I added, “A specific little girl.”

If she’d been angry before I opened my mouth, it was nothing compared to the anger igniting her face in response to what I said.

“What kinds of sickos are you?” she spat as she got to her feet.

“No! No!” I cried, gesturing for her to stop getting up. “It’s nothing like that, I promise!” I didn’t even want to know what she’d assumed.
