THE HOME COMPLEX ALERT system jolted Harley awake.

“Warning, unfamiliar craft docking in the landing pod...”

“Warning, unfamiliar craft docking in the landing pod...”

“Warning, unfamiliar craft docking in the landing pod...”

“Warning, unfamiliar craft docking in the landing pod...”

He scrambled to shut down the systems and clean up the home lab while watching the council skycar on the overhead security monitors. It glided into the landing pod and came to a rest inside.

As he was finishing, he saw Sampson and several android Security Team members disembark. He left the lab in a rush and stood outside it.

“Conceal home lab two,” he commanded. The entrance disappeared into the wall. He walked farther down the hall, until he came to the test android storage room.

“Conceal test android room.” He continued down the hall and stopped before a blank space in the wall.

“Reveal diversion lab.”

An entrance appeared. “Open,” Harley instructed. An entrance portal appeared, and he walked through it, sitting down quickly and switching on the equipment at the workstation.

The alternate lab was a scaled-down facsimile of his main home lab. Harley hoped that his occasional use of it to build mundane firmware updates would be enough to mislead the investigators he knew were closing in.

He dashed around the table to an older-model test android seated in a DroidMesh station. Panic surged through him as he tried to run through the scenarios and outcomes of what might be about to happen. I hope I can survive this. I hope Isaac can survive it. I’m so close.

He had just sat back down and begun the pretense of writing code when another announcement came.

“Visitors approaching.”

“Allow access,” he said.

He was peering into the monitor with his fingers dancing across the table’s sensors when they entered.

“That’s enough, Harris,” Sampson shouted as he entered the lab.

Harley jumped to his feet. “What is this? What’re you doing here? This is my home.”

Sampson stepped into the lab and looked around. “Just as I thought. Mr. Harris, you’re in violation of the council’s order to shut down BrainMesh. You’ve been continuing the project in this home lab.”

“I’m doing research, Sampson. It’s not the same thing. Different code bases.”

Sampson looked at the Security Team. “Detain him.”

He smiled at Harley. “You can tell it to the council at your hearing. For now, you’ll be held in the Detention Area.”

The android Security team approached and asked him to comply without resistance.

Harley turned to Sampson. “What about my son? He’s all I have. He needs me here.”

“He seems to do quite well without you,” Sampson said with indifference. “He’s a young man—it’s about time he learned to function without his daddy doing everything for him. Besides, he’s got his...nursemaid, the gynoid that’s always glued to him.”

“Shut down lab,” Harley instructed. The monitors, test android, and DroidMesh station went dark.

“Take him to the skycar,” Sampson ordered. “I’ll be up shortly—as soon as I get done dismantling this lab and getting this stuff ready to be sent back to the Robotics Complex for analysis.”

“You won’t win, Sampson,” Harley said. “It’s you who belongs in Seclusion.
