Both eclipsed by the lure of what lay nearest me. I didn’t form a mouth. The cryosac couldn’t escape. More importantly, the appearance of a gaping mouth might set off my friend’s own instincts and he mustn’t run.

There being Ersh-memory of such chases in me.

In less than a blink of Paul’s eyes, I oozed sideways to cover the cryosac, discarding what wasn’t living, and took in what still was.

It wasn’t Ersh.
