For years, the Jagged R had been nothing more to Drake than a place to hide from the world. Heâd left the operation of the ranch to Parker, and his friend had done a good job of it. Rutledge cattle grazed thousands of acres of grasslands, a land free of fences, where feed and water were plentiful.
Today, as he and the men rode across the range, Drake thought how good it was to be with them. It was good to be riding in the daylight, too. No one spoke, but it was a companionable silence. A shared silence among men who understood each other, men who were comfortable with themselves and their work.
The years fell away, taking Drake back to the carefree time of his youth when he'd been like these cowboys, when he'd been a whole man, able to see and to ride and to rope. He wouldn't ever be that young cowboy again, but he could be something different, God willing.
Perhaps he could make a difference, for himself and for the people who lived in Dead Horse.
With sudden clarity, Drake realized that if it hadn't been for his accident, he would be trapped in an office in Philadelphia instead of sitting astride a horse, surrounded by majestic mountains and the land he loved. If he'd married Larissa, he would be handling dull, boring cases for Rutledge and Seever during the day and escorting his beautiful, spoiled wife to staid suppers and musicales in the evenings. He would have been imprisoned by that life as surely as heâd been imprisoned by his partial blindness and by his guilt.
He was pulled from his private musings by Dan Greer's voice.
"We'll be back by the end of next week," the cowboy told Parker. His gaze shifted to Drake. Then he tugged on his hat brim in a friendly salute, turned his horse, and cantered south, accompanied by Swede Swenson on his ugly white gelding. Moments later, Will Kidd and Johnny Coltrain rode east.
"Come on, Drake." Parker turned his mount in the opposite direction. "We'll check on the line shack up on Cougar Creek."
They moved out at a walk, giving their horses a brief rest.
"You should have come into town with us yesterday," the foreman said. "We had quite the holiday."
"Another time. Folks aren't used to seeingââ"
"It's not so bad. Your face, I mean."
Drake shrugged, not wanting to remember the way he'd felt when Larissa had turned away from him, as if he were some sort of freak.
Faith doesn't turn away.
No, Faith didn't turn away. She hadn't when she first met him, and she hadn't last night. But she was different from Larissa in countless ways. She was wary of him, yes, but not because of his scar. Her reasons were different, something to do with her past. He could sense it, perhaps because he'd carried a similar hurt for so long. If only he could get her to talk about it. Then maybe he could convince her to stay in Wyoming.
Drake gave his head a slight shake to dislodge the persistent thoughts.
