-THUNDERWING-
As told by Dan Leatherborne
Life became more or less as normal as it could ever get once Gregâs funeral was over and done with.
For a while I was happy. I felt like the luckiest guy in the world. I had good friends and a good looking girlfriend, who I was determined to stay with for as long as possible. Some nights I would go around to her place to do the sort of things that couples do. I donât want you to think that it was all endlessly boning each other, because it wasnât. We had an awful lot of sex, donât get me wrong on that one, but we did other things as well. We talked, read to each other from magazines, did lazy stuff like that. We had dinner with her parents a couple of times and sometimes we just sat around watching TV or doing nothing at all. It was peaceful, pleasant and kind of the way I was hoping the rest of my life would be.
I was happy being with Eliza.
I thought she was happy with me.
The nights I didnât spend with Eliza were some of the most chaotic, fun, and perhaps even the best times of my life. I spent them at the home of a certain hero, leg-end and graffe fighter where, with my other new friends, we would behave like total savages; without any rules, regulations or adults to tell us what to do. We downed a lot of alcohol as I recall but we never had enough to become completely and totally plastered. Although saying that, Will could drink in the world championships if he wanted. He could down a whole bottle of vodka in one go and still not seem even remotely tipsy at the end.
It wasnât long before Joe was introducing us to drinking games such as âShot Riskâ where you took a shot of alcohol every time you lost an army, a country or control of a continent. It was madness and I would have been sunk had Will not taught myself and Doug the best strategies for winning. He told us to always aim to take South America and Australasia whilst trying to prevent other players from gaining control of a continent and protecting your borders at the same time. He told us to forget about reclaiming any lost territory straight away. He used the phrase âan eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.â Iâm led to believe this originates from Gandhi who Iâm sure would be spinning in his grave if he were aware that someone like Will was using one of his sayings.
This strategy inevitably led to a stalemate between myself, Doug and Will whilst Joe always got completely fucked over.
When we werenât making mischief amongst ourselves weâd be out on the streets of Worton hunting for any trouble with the graffe. We didnât raid any nests though. Thank god. Will was of the opinion that his last raid had caused quite enough trouble.
