This is a very particular model of cosmopolitanism – bourgeois, individualised and relentlessly cheerful, coming as it does out of the West Coast technoculture. But Butterfield’s normative description of what Flickr is for captures one aspect of the site’s potential particularly well. That is, it is the sheer ubiquitous and ordinary nature of most everyday photography, and its embeddedness within social life, that creates the conditions for Flickr as a platform for vernacular creativity with all its unintended consequences – citizenship, commerce and art.
