EARTH YEAR 2276
Within three weeks of the strange demonstration put on by Rod Sanches on the tennis court of the bungalow he and Hortense had retired to five years previously, all the signs of the huge effort to counter the coming threat from the Flaarg had been removed. Once more the rustle of leaves in the ever-present onshore breeze, was all that could be heard in the orchards and with the exception of an old couple that regularly lived in while Hortense was away, not a living soul disturbed the tranquillity.
This was more than could be said for three locations in the human occupied worlds!
Clarrie Misserwell and her partner Benny Sorner were busily visiting all the ore collection centres around the outer rim of human space meeting the returning miners and questioning them about Flaarg activity. The miners were then told of the fate of Sommy Ramirez and the others who had gone missing in the last couple of years. Next, came the request that they pull off from mining and allow their ships to be modified for one special trip, all expenses paid up front, into the farthest reaches of space to collect one particular mineral.
Some of them simply asked âhowâ? Others went very pale and questioned their sanity.
All undertook to rendezvous off New Mars in four weeks, where it was expected they would witness a demonstration designed to convince them, both of the need and feasibility of what they were being asked to do. In the meantime, no one was to take any more trips into the frontier zones, just in case they were pulled in by the Flaarg and forced to reveal what mankind was up to. To ensure this, all the miners were paid what they could have earned during the period, with a generous bonus on top.
Once Clarrie and Benny had completed their task they journeyed to New Mars, where they joined the team Hortense was heading up. The purpose of this group was to arrive at a workable set of tactics to be used against the Flaarg, assuming they had numbers of the new weapon. Similarly, based on regular updates concerning the capabilities of the weaponry being developed by Rod Sanches and his team on the Moon of Old Earth, methods of attack against both ships and planets were developed and tested. The latter was something that had never been done by mankind, so tactics had to be worked up from scratch. The biggest problem with attacking a planet from space being that it would possess an almost infinite energy base, while any ship in space could only rely on the energy available from portable generators, which would be of a strictly finite capacity.
While all this rushing about in space was going on, Rod Sanches seemed never to move out of his offices on the Moon, except to join in the testing of some new component or process. His initial priority was to devise a method of mimicking the egg device
