TEXT UNIT 0035

Rohi Kahpanova took a moment to massage her temples before digging into yet another witness report. There had been almost two hundred Gorthans in that saloon, and every last one of them had been more than happy to give their own version of the events. The statements were incredibly detailed and quite . . . colorful.

“The tussle got started by three o’ them Squidlings from Tentaclon. . . .”

“There was ten of ‘em, and they was all gold-skinned Vixenettes . . . and they definitely wanted a piece o’ my man business.”

“Then I drank, like, twenty chuz!”

“If I hadn’t a’ been there . . . everyone woulda been turnt into humpalope dung.”

“Then he says, Get your own globnob!”

She sighed, put down the info log, and pinched the bridge of her nose. She reached down to open her bottom drawer, revealing a gold bottle. She pulled the top off and held it up to her nose, inhaling deeply. Her fingers flexed as she stared at the empty glass on her desk. She stretched out to grab it. Her graceful fingers wrapped around the glass, and she paused. She sat like that for a few moments. Her gaze passed from the bottle to the empty glass to the pile of work on her desk. She exhaled in annoyance and let go of the glass. She capped the bottle and returned it to its home in the drawer. She was just about to get back to reading when she noticed a blinking light on her console, indicating she had a new notification. She opened the message and was on the commline before she’d even finished reading. After a series of clicks, a tired voice answered, “Confiscation vaults.”

“This is Division Officer Rohi Kahpanova. I have a notification here telling me that someone has been in the vault pertaining to incident 0000102214. Who was in that vault?”

“No problem, D.O. What is your clearance code?”

“Clearance code KRG0201.”

“Checking. . . Code cleared. Okay, D.O. Let’s see. It looks like a key major named Ferru was cleared to examine the evidence.”

“Key Major Ferru . . . I don’t know any Key Major Ferru . . .”

“Um . . . no offense, D.O., but aren’t there, like, over a thousand active key majors?”

“One thousand and thirteen,” she mumbled under her breath. Into the comm she said, “Send me the video logs of the key major’s visit.”

“Affirmative, D.O.”

A new notification popped up, and she terminated the call. A screen opened on her console, showing an overhead shot of six figures making their way down the hallway leading to the confiscation vaults. Rohi recognized the chief arms guard heading up the pack. The other five were new to her. They walked the length of the hall and entered the vault. A casual eye wouldn’t have noticed anything out of the ordinary. Rohi ran it back and watched again. And then again. It was on the third viewing that she saw it, right as the group was making their way past the camera.
