It wasn’t pitch black – there was an ambient blue light filling the station that Pappy’s eyes slowly adjusted to.

He kept pivoting back and forth, checking his mini map for red blips as Zero led them. The patrol constantly checked their flanks and rear for enemy contacts.

In order to maximize the stealth suit’s effectiveness, Pappy kept from making any sudden movements. He took pensive little steps and slid his soles across the deck.

Zero deactivated her suit’s active camouflage and made the ‘stop’ hand-arm signal. She took a knee as if using her HUD to make a bearing check.

Leaning against a support pylon, Pappy saw two warriors hiding in the shadows and using their armor’s built-in camouflage to blend in with the station. Something about the way they stood looked familiar. They deactivated their camouflage, and Pappy recognized their armor before their helmets split open to show their faces. A middle-aged Dragon woman in red and black armor and a burly, wide Owl with a brown poncho cape and cowl.

“Truth?” Pappy asked. “Is that you?”

She peeked her head out; Kills-With-His-Hands close to her side. It was them. They were both heavily armed with sagging weapons belts. They came ready for a mission. How did they end up there? Pappy wondered.

Pappy’s heart raced thinking about all the things he wanted to say to Truth. She looked healthy. She looked good. Her face looked different somehow though – leaner, harder. He thought that he saw a small glint of recognition in her eyes, but it was hard to tell in the dim light. They looked at each other like strangers again, even after what they had been through together.

“Holy shit,” Gonzo whispered excitedly “It’s you guys.”

“Stay focused,” Zero snapped and stood in front of Truth. “The dreadnought isn’t here.” Zero must have gotten the latest intel from the Star Raven right before her other body destroyed itself.

Truth’s eyes widened in realization. [Our information was faulty.]

Zero shrugged. “Or out of date. We might have just missed her. We need a way to warn our people. This station must have a communications hub.”

Kills-With-His-Hands nodded and leaned on his staff weapon. [A station this size has several. How far away are your people?]

“Several systems. A few FTL jumps by your reckoning.”

Kills-With-His-Hands grunted. [That should be fine] he muttered and looked at Truth. [Which way, teacher?]

She thought. [There’s a room several decks above us. It’s close. Smaller than the main communications station, but it should be able to reach your people if we make the right modifications. These ancillary communications rooms are close to the craft bays. They’re used to direct ship traffic. It’s not uncommon for patrols to sweep these areas. There won’t just be sentries that we need to avoid, but the station’s crew and passengers as well.]

Zero pressed her thin lips together. “What are the alternatives?”

Kills-With-His-Hands ran a thumb along the inside of his palm and looked up as he tried to visualize the inside of the station. [The main communications tower on the northern hemisphere is not a possibility.
