EIGHT

Ben silently cursed the raw nerves that burned and the weakened muscles that ached. He limped his way out the door, only pausing long enough to prop his cane against the foyer wall. Keenly aware that Savannah was behind him, he waited until he heard the click of the lock before he left the porch. He slid along the side of the house and stealthily eased his way to the window where the noise came from. Ben might not have speed anymore, but he could still move without making a sound.

A gust pushed him closer to the wall of the house. He hugged the edge and swept around the corner. Ben gripped his weapon in both hands, ready to fire if the need arose. Another stiff breeze blew into him. He heard a scratching sound that rivaled nails on a chalkboard.

He shook his head and bit back a chuckle. Ben circled the palm and its flowy fronds that occasionally rubbed against the nearest window. No intruder, only a strong wind and a limber tree at the mercy of the wind, swaying in tune with the elements.

Ben shuffled his way back to the front door. His brisk knock was immediately answered by a pale-faced Savannah. She let out a long sigh. “Find anything?”

“It’s the palm tree by the window,” he explained. “The wind’s gotten stronger since we went inside. A storm is brewing.”

“I’m glad it was only a tree!” She shuddered, and Ben wrapped an arm around her waist. “Usually, I appreciate a good storm, but I think the excitement of so many unpleasant surprises have finally caught up to me,” she confessed. “I should call it a night.”

Ben recognized that as his cue to leave. “I don’t want to get caught in a raging storm.” Though, he feared it was already too late. Savannah surged into his life with the impact of a hurricane, and he was in no hurry to say goodbye.

He cupped her face between his hands and kissed her goodnight. Ben lightly rested his forehead against hers after the kiss ended. “You’ve got my number. Call me for any reason. Can’t sleep, hear a noise, anything.”

“Thanks for the offer, but I’ll be fine. Been living alone for years, and honestly, despite the egging and the flower murder, I’m not scared of Ivan. He might be an ass, but he’s a harmless one.”

Ben had his doubts but kept them to himself. “You don’t have to be scared, just be alert. If you need something and don’t want to call me for whatever reason, reach out to Marcus.”

She smiled at him. “I will,” Savannah promised.

“I already checked your window locks when we did the walkthrough. You’re good as soon as you lock this one,” he reminded her. Ben opened the door and trudged to his SUV. The wind whipped around him, stirring up dry leaves, pollen, dust, and other debris in its wake.

He slid into his SUV, locked the door behind him, started the engine, and drove off. Trusting
