Chapter 9

This has to be the person who took Reilin. Jeso felt compelled to deal with his primary mission rather than waste time trying to defend the settlement. If he left, if he went to the Guild vessel, he figured he’d find the girl there. I could be out of here before any other problems come up.

It would’ve involved killing Ali though. With the other two gone, that probably didn’t matter. If something happened and he found himself accused of such a murder, he could just as easily say one of the enemy fired from the door. He’d have to do it from the front though. She didn’t seem like the type to turn her back on the danger in front of her.

“How’d you come to be here?” Jeso asked. “Seems a little out of the way for a proper Guild trader.”

“Necessity,” Ali replied. “We needed some downtime.”

Really… Jeso bit his tongue from calling her out directly. They sent her here to lay low so they could maximize the damage of abducting Aidrik’s daughter. Of course, she couldn’t say such a thing out loud to a stranger. Her story was probably just as plausible as anything else she might’ve said.

“What about you?” Ali turned to him. “How’d you know about this place?”

“Got the coordinates from a friend,” Jeso said. “I thought I could offload some goods that would be easier for the Guild to sell in the outer territories. Needed to fuel up as well. When I got here and things were going bad, I volunteered to help. Hence why I entered this area alone.”

I need the contacts. Jeso wished he could count on Ali to become such a person. If she hadn’t taken Reilin, he would’ve worked the angle. Made a connection. She had the air of reliability. Definitely sterner stuff than a lot of the people I end up working with. Maybe too much so since she’s down here with me.

“I see.” Ali looked him up and down. “Tell me something… why would you risk your life coming down here alone? For strangers, I mean. It doesn’t make a lot of sense. You didn’t know if you’d have backup. In fact, chances were good you wouldn’t. So what’s the deal?”

“Not feeling very grateful?” Jeso smiled.

“It’s not that,” Ali said, “but it is suspicious.”

“Ah, you think I’ve got an in with the criminals.” Jeso shrugged. “I honestly didn’t think that door,” he gestured to the one Erva and Seth used, “would be easy to open. I figured they had to come through over there. And when they did, I’d finish them off. How many could rush through at once? I had the advantage with cover.”

She’s not wrong though. I’m an outsider. The Maldan guy was desperate, but she has the luxury of looking at the situation pragmatically.

Ali opened her mouth to speak again when the others started talking through the comms. They broke into a firefight then continued down the way after dispatching two more of the enemies. Jeso tapped her on the arm, gesturing to the crates.
