CHAPTER 24

When Avalon walked into her apartment, her parents were sitting on the sofa as if they’d been sitting there the whole time Avalon had been gone and they weren’t trying to not look guilty for allowing people into her bedroom to hide sound recording devices to spy on her.

“Hello, Avalon. Did you have a nice time?” her mother asked.

“Yes, I did. Thank you. We tried three new coffee drinks.”

“Three?” her father said. “That sounds like a lot in just two hours.”

“It was.” She laughed a fake laugh. “But I wanted to try as many as possible so I would know what my favorite was when I met him. I thought it might be a nice conversation topic. He could tell me his favorite coffee drink, and I could tell him mine. Maybe I could make his for him one day and like it myself.”

“That’s nice,” her mother replied. “Your father and I are going to bed early tonight, so you’re free to go to your room for the rest of the night.”

“Okay. Thank you. I’ll just shower first,” she said.

“Very well,” her mother replied.

The two of them rose from the sofa, but instead of going first down the hall, they both motioned for Avalon to walk ahead of them. This was odd. They’d never wanted her to walk ahead of them like this. They’d also never seemed this rehearsed in the short time she’d known them. Avalon couldn’t argue, though, so she started walking, swallowing as she went, hoping that Myria hadn’t been a double agent. She didn’t know what awaited her in her bedroom. Maybe instead of a recording device, they’d found the hole, and two guards were waiting to take her away. Maybe she’d have to yell through that hole to Thea, telling her to run; telling her goodbye.

“Good night,” her father said as he moved around her to get to his own room when they arrived at Avalon’s door.

“Good night, Father,” she replied.

Her mother didn’t say goodnight, but she disappeared into her own bedroom.

Avalon took a deep breath and pushed open her door. Again, nothing appeared to be out of place. The poster was still exactly where it should be. When Myria had told them earlier that it would only be a sound recorder, not a video, Avalon had wondered why they wouldn’t just add a video component, too. After all, they hadn’t minded spying on her when she had been in her cell at the Facility. The camera’s flashing red light had made it nearly impossible to sleep. To be careful, though, she walked around the room, knowing that Thea was probably doing the same thing, and checked for the recorder.

She found it, hidden at the back of her screen. Well, it was actually installed inside it, and the only way she’d found it was because one of the screws they’d needed to take out and put back in after looked as if it had been tampered with. Avalon looked closer and saw a small, flat, round black piece with a short black wire hanging off it.
