“Wake up.”
I startled when a soft pillow connected with my head, scaring me from my sleep. Shooting up into a sitting position, I glanced to my side, eyes blurry, to see Squall standing a few feet away from me, his makeshift bed already made up. He was dressed in robes much like the ones he wore yesterday; it looked like he was ready to leave the house.
“Get dressed. We gotta get goin’,” he said briskly.
Swinging my feet off the bed, I walked over to where I left the clothes Heana had provided for me. I picked them up and spread them out on the bed. They were a lot like what Squall and Dimin wore, a set of light underclothes and robes that would have to be fastened with a sash. The sash was probably what Heana was saying she would help me with because I wasn’t exactly sure how they tied it. Everything else seemed straightforward enough.
Click.
I turned my head when I heard a noise from behind. The door was closed and Squall was gone. I guess he figured I wasn’t crazy enough to try and jump out the window while alone. We were rather high up. A fall from this height would have certainly killed me.
With a sigh, I pulled off my nightgown and worked through the different pieces of clothing: underwear, a lightweight shirt, pants, and then the robes. I simply carried the sash in my hand, my robes open as I emerged from the room. Heana was just outside, her hand on the doorknob.
“Looks like ya got it mostly figured out.” She smiled, holding out her hands for the sash.
I gave it to her, and she showed me how to tie it around my robes to keep them secured. I played with the large hood, enjoying how it concealed my face but still managed not to hinder my visibility much.
She had a scarf (dust mask) in her hand that she wrapped around my neck after lowering my hood. “Don’t ever forget the dust blocker,” she told me. “Sand in yer face ain’t too pleasant.”
She wasn’t kidding. I hadn’t done much walking in the desert, but what I had done was always without proper protection. It was rather miserable. Sand bites at your skin and seems to corrode it after a while. I had to wonder if the soap Heana used in my bath yesterday had healing properties because my skin looked too good, too new, after everything I had been through. I wasn’t complaining though.
Then Heana handed me a pair of shoes, which I quickly slipped on. They were a little big, but so was everything else. It couldn’t be helped as I assumed it all belonged to her, and she was definitely taller and wider than I was. Still, with the flowing clothes it hardly mattered. And our shoe size was actually pretty close, somehow.
“Squall let ya sleep in, so I’m sendin’ ya both off with breakfast to go,” Heana continued as I followed her into the kitchen.
