Chapter Three

“What are we going to do when he gets here?”

Roan’s fingers traced a path up and down Aaron’s spine, drawing faint little shivers with them. “Confront him.”

Aaron groaned. He really didn’t look forward to that conversation. They’d had it before, many times over the past few years. He usually felt like he’d make more progress talking to a brick wall. Andy was dead-set in his ways, and Aaron doubted there was little in the world that could change it.

“I have no idea what to say to him, Roan. This kind of lifestyle has gone on for five years, since we started college right out of high school. Hell, he wasn’t much better in high school. It’s a damn miracle the ass managed to get and stay on the honor roll with me.”

“Well, despite this… hiccup… in his brain’s reasoning capabilities, he seems to be relatively intelligent.”

Aaron laughed. “Hiccup. That’s a good word for it, considering it’s practically impossible to get rid of. But yes, Andy is brilliant. We both have pretty high IQs. He just doesn’t use his brain.”

“Then maybe it is time to point that out?”

Aaron wondered if it could be that easy. Would Andy really listen if Aaron approached it that way? “Maybe.”

He sat up and glanced at the clock. Fourteen hours had flown by, and he found himself dreading the moment when Roan left. Then he called himself a fool for thinking even that much. Roan was a demon. As far as Aaron knew, demons didn’t linger once they were done with, well, whatever they had to do. Roan was here to collect a debt, nothing more. But the thought of him leaving made something in Aaron crack and threaten to shatter. Aaron couldn’t explain it but he felt a connection with Roan, one that he’d never felt with anyone else, human or otherwise.

“You’re pensive. Something’s on your mind besides your brother, I’ll wager.”

Aaron summoned a smile. It wasn’t really that difficult, to be honest. Roan made him happy, even if for a little while. “Just thinking.”

“About?”

“It’s nothing. Really.” Aaron started to get out of bed, but Roan grabbed his hand to stop him. “Please. I --”

“You aren’t alone, Aaron.”

Aaron wished he could believe that, but when Roan left, he would be. Again. “You, uh, wanna take a shower with me?”

Roan chuckled. “I doubt there’d be much cleaning involved. There certainly wasn’t before.”

“Good point.” Aaron laughed. “I’ll be back in a few minutes then.”

Roan released him and Aaron went to the bathroom, shutting the door behind him. He leaned back against it and sighed. A demon. Less than twenty-four hours and he was already starting to fall for the demon. Shit. He swore he wouldn’t get into this situation again, not after his last boyfriend cheated on him and half the town found out. Now here he was, fantasizing about what it would be like to have Roan living with him, seeing the demon every day, making love every night.

“Christ, you’ve got it bad, Aaron,” he muttered to himself.
