We ride lifeâs waves
as if made of driftwood,
From our roots cut, fallen,
and cast on the deep
How then will we rise
and learn to walk as we should
When we come to the shallows
to search for relief?
I was preparing to move into the inspiring second stanza when I looked up to see what effect my poem was having. To my surprise, there were now not two boys but manyâeight? ten?âcrowded around me, each in an identical cap. When I looked down, I saw only a miniature mob with dirty faces.
You are water-logged,
drowning,
but fear not, floating youth!
Branches hardened by the ocean
have strength deep within.
The beach beckons with sunshine,
glowing like truth,
The shore will rise to meet
you as the tide rolls in.
