Chapter 28

Time to Face the Music

DANNY FOLLOWS ME OUT of the King’s Head, trailing so closely behind me I can smell the musk of his cologne.

“Get in the motorcar,” he orders.

I get in and he starts the car and pulls away, the velocity forcing me back in my seat.

“What’s the matter?” I look through the back window and see a line of cars follow ours. “Are we being followed?”

“No. It’s just Jimmy and some of the other men.” His voice is forced, cold as ice. There’s a solid firmness to his jaw and the dim light casts angry-looking shadows from the peaks of his hard cheekbones.

“Then what’s happened? Why did you drag me out of the King’s?” I’m confused and want to find out the root of his anger.

“Did you see Benny’s killer?”

“No.” I’m about to ask if he did but he can’t have since I’m the only person who can recognise the man.

“Were you even looking?”

“You know I was.”

“Were you? Because I thought I brought you there to look for the killer not to flirt with Lorenzo Cervini, of all people.”

“What? I wasn’t flirting. What’s gotten into you?”

“You were holding his hand and throwing love in his eyes with your own,” Danny spits disgustedly and his anger spikes mine.

“I was talking to him.”

His hands grip the steering wheel tightly and he lets out a bitter laugh. “I was getting the motorcar to take you home while you were courting my enemy.” His face is so harsh that it hurts my eyes. I look away, watching the buildings pass by at speed.

“Slow down. You’re going to kill us both!”

As though a red rag to a bull, he speeds up. The fact that he is pissed off with me, only serves to make me more pissed off with him.

“You’re so childish. I can talk to whomever I like, even if that person happens to be a monster just like you!”

He slows the speed of the car but only slightly. “So that’s why you were allowing his advances? To make me jealous?”

“Make you jealous? For someone who couldn’t be plainer about his disinterest in me, you’re incredibly particular about who I might talk to!”

“Lorenzo is only interested in taking you to his bed!”

“So what? A woman can talk to a man without getting in his bed. And so what if I did go to bed with him. What has it got to do with y—”

The car screeches to a complete stop in the middle of the road. I brace myself for the onslaught of a rear end shunt, but Jimmy and the others must have turned off our path, either that or they’ve been unable to keep up.

His face swings in my direction. Harsh eyes pin me to my seat but I refuse to back down. “You will not go to the bed of my sworn enemy!”

“I’ll do whatever the hell I want!” I spit back, now more concerned with the principle of our argument than the context of his issue.
