❧

Sleep evaded Katelyn as she cared for one, then another, throughout the night. The sun rose, its amber light filtering into corners of the soddie. People woke, needing attention. About midmorning, workers arrived. Sounds of hammers pounding nails and axes hacking wood cheered her after listening to nothing but moans all night.

Beth returned wearing a fresh cinnamon-colored dress. She approached Katelyn, who was busy brewing tea and creating paste poultices.

“Good morning,” Katelyn greeted her. “How are you?”

Smiling, Beth answered, “All mine’s fine.”

Katelyn’s heart jumped in her chest. “I’m so happy for you, Beth, so very, very happy!” She easily remembered her own relief when her mother and Carrie had pulled through.

Surrounding her in a hug, Beth told her, “I’m here to spell ya, if’n ya be needin’ to git home for a time. Surely that mother of your’n could use the sight of ya.”

Without hesitation, Katelyn briefed Beth on what needed to be done: water boiled, blankets washed, feedings, medicines applied to sores, fevers brought down. She spoke so fast, Beth broke into giggles.

“I’ll just do what I can ’til ya git back,” she told Katelyn. “Ya can leave them younguns here if’n ya want.”

“Thank you, so much, Beth!” She glanced around her, hoping to locate James, then remembered he rode into town to establish the quarantine measures.

She turned to face Beth again. “If James returns, please tell him where I’ve gone. And that I’ll be back soon.”

“Will do.”

Making her way outside, Katelyn saddled a mule and headed home. She hadn’t realized how much she missed her mother or her home until she saw it again. Excitement welled within her at the thought of seeing her mother again. She had so much to discuss with her and so many questions.

They hadn’t lost anybody during the night. The dawn had brought a beautiful day. A few billowy clouds flirted in the blue sky overhead, and Katelyn’s spirits soared.
