“I’ve never seen Vick warm up to anybody that quickly.” Patty couldn’t help being impressed by the way Kellan had handled the prickly cowboy. Then again, there didn’t seem to be anything she didn’t like about Kellan Maddox these days. If she wasn’t careful, she was going to finish falling for him and then what? Common sense told her it was better to keep things light and flirtatious between them, to enjoy the time they had left together, and to let him go when the time came.

They were back in his Rolls Royce, cruising toward home.

He shrugged. “Vick has a good heart. He didn’t need a high-pressure sales pitch,” his voice turned teasing, “unlike a certain doc that I had to spend an entire month wearing down for our first date.”

“Wait a sec!” She swiveled impulsively in his direction. “I specifically recall you saying it was a business meeting.”

“Then I still owe you a date.” The warmth in his turquoise gaze made her breathing hitch. “Just for the record, you were worth the wait, Pattykins. I hope you feel the same.”

She turned her head away, allowing her dark hair to fall between them like a curtain. “For all the reasons I previously gave you, it’s probably still not a good idea.” She peeked at Sherman in the front seat from beneath her lashes, trying to gauge if he was listening. He was looking straight ahead.

Kellan was quiet for so long that she regretted being so honest. By the time he started speaking, her heart was quaking over the very real possibility that she might’ve finally ruined things between them for good.

“In my experience, nothing worth having ever comes easy, Pattykins. I know the details surrounding my arrival to town were complicated. I can’t change that. All I want is for you to give whatever is happening between us a chance.”

Remorse slammed into her at the kindness of his words. No matter how many times she’d tried to push him away, he just kept taking it on the cheek. She had to hand it to him; he was a ridiculous optimist — continuing to hope when she gave him very little reason to.

“This isn’t about your past or about Hope, Kellan,” Patty choked, still unable to look at him. “It was initially, but it isn’t anymore.” It was personal. She was afraid of being vulnerable after all these years of being self-sufficient. She was afraid of caring too much and holding on too hard, only to be disappointed when things didn’t work out in the end. Which was still a very real possibility…

“I guess I’m mostly afraid to move forward in our relationship, because I finally met a guy I don’t want to lose.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Kellan declared in a low voice. “I have a growing list of reasons why I want to be with you, but the one at the very top of my list right now is this: No one should have to be alone on their birthday.”

Feeling the last of her resistance crumble, she dared to meet his gaze at long last.
