Chapter Twenty-Nine: Delta Troopers

Kapten Sif, VRAEC, Nakija Musta Toiminnot

They weren’t in a prison. They were in the Peacekeeper barracks of Zvezda Two, and there were plenty of things for soldiers to do. There were weights, treadmills, and a digital range. The Peacekeepers who had originally been here were now planet side with Stathis, and Aesir from Sleipner had taken over. The Aesir and the two Delta Force soldiers kept their distance from each other, and Sif felt everyone’s attention focus on her as she entered the cafeteria. Both Robillard and Peshlakai were sitting by themselves in a corner, and the few Aesir eating were on the opposite side. Her eyes locked on them, and she headed toward them, feeling their unease and nervousness as she got closer.

Robillard was a big man, not tall. At first glance, he looked fat, but Sif knew that wasn’t the case. Sumo wrestlers were not fat, their muscles were just proportioned differently. He shaved his head like Mathison and was barely taller than Stathis.

Peshlakai was different. Short and thin, he was a Native American with brownish skin and short, jet-black hair. While Robillard looked like he had to shave constantly, Peshlakai looked like he had never shaved in his entire life. His eyes watched her approach, and she felt he was measuring everything, her step, her eye movement, and the way her hand rested on her weapon. He watched her as a cautious warrior might. He exuded curiosity, but Robillard was full of mistrust and simmering anger.

She stopped at their table. She didn’t use her little girl persona. That wouldn’t help, and it wouldn’t fool either of them or get them to drop their guard.

“I’m hunting vanhat beyond Sol and I need warriors,” Sif said. Might as well get to the point. “Will you take my orders?”

Robillard’s reaction was negative, though he didn’t show it, but Peshlakai seemed even more curious. Would she have to convince them both? Right now, she would take what she could get.

“Our place is here on Earth,” Robillard said. He was a lieutenant according to records, though he had held an assortment of ranks under Becket. Peshlakai had been a staff sergeant when America fell, and like Robillard, he had held many ranks and responsibilities.

Ranks probably meant little to them after so long, which Sif could deal with, but it usually helped military personnel establish their hierarchy. Telling them she was a kapten would not impress them.

“I’m one of the senior members of the new ExSec—” which they should know “—and I am going to be hunting some very specific vanhat, elite warriors who have joined the enemy but did not become mindless creatures.”

“Little lady,” Robillard said, and Sif could feel his rejection, whether it was because he didn’t want to leave Earth or because he looked down on her, she couldn’t tell. “Good luck on your hunt. I think Earth needs us more. The galaxy is vast, and I’m sure you could be hunting, even killing, vanhat for hundreds of years, but if we lose Earth, it is over for us.
