6. Teachability
To learn from your losses, you've got to be teachable. If you make the mistake of assuming you already know it all, you're going to miss out on some great lessons.
In practical terms, being teachable means you have the intentional attitude that you will keep learning and growing throughout your life. To succeed and hopefully excel tomorrow, you must be teachable today.
“What got you to where you are won't keep you here. And it certainly won't take you where you want to go. You need more than a great mind for learning. You need to have a great heart for learning. That's what a teachable spirit gives you.”
- John Maxwell
To find the pathway from failure to success, you need to become highly teachable. You do that by cultivating these character traits:
You need to be open to learning – to have the attitude that you're keen to learn and willing to pay the price to acquire more knowledge. You need to have a teachable spirit and a positive outlook on life to be teachable.
You have to possess a beginner's mind-set – that is, you need to admit you don't know it all and therefore you're willing and anxious to learn from others. You also need to accept that everyone you come into contact with can teach you something valuable and worthwhile.
You need to be open and honest – meaning you look in the mirror and admit you're ready to make changes. Unless you recognize your own shortcomings, you won't be actively looking for better solutions.
You need to encourage others to speak up – to signal clearly that you're open to learning and would welcome their help. Surround yourself with people who will tell you the truth rather than those who are always seeking your approval. Also get into the habit of listening rather than talking all the time.
You need to start each day with an intention to learn something new – put learning at the top of your agenda and make it a daily habit of yours.
