chapter 31
Katie stood in her slippers at the kitchen counter and waited for the coffee to finish brewing. She smiled at Goofy, who was smiling back at her from the Disney World souvenir mug that Patch and Lizzy had bought her the previous summer. Pulling her hair into a haphazard twist, she fastened it with a clip from the pocket of her white terrycloth shorts.
The coffeemaker beeped three times. She filled the mug and padded around the breakfast bar that overlooked the adjoining family room. Her favorite overstuffed denim chair waited for her in the corner, in the muted glow of the reading lamp. Holding her cup high, she snuggled in with her legs curled beneath her. After a few tentative sips, she reached over and picked up her book of daily devotions.
It was five-fifteen in the morning, her favorite time of the day. The sun wasnât up yet and neither were Lizzy, Patch, and Jack. This was her time. She liked to spend it studying her Bible and talking to God. This morning she particularly wanted to talk about Patchâs catch the day before. Patch didnât ask for much. She was thrilled that for once he had gotten to be the star. She closed her eyes. Thank you, God, for giving that moment to my son.
Opening her eyes, she split the pages at the bookmark and found the thought for the day: God is working behind the scenes in your life. It focused on a story about a king whose army surrounded a city where the prophet Elisha and his servant were hiding. When Elishaâs servant looked over the city wall and saw the army, he panicked.
âDonât be afraid,â Elisha said. âThose who are with us are more than those who are against us.â Elisha prayed for God to open the boyâs eyes and let him see what Elisha could see. The servant looked out again and saw chariots of fire completely surrounding the army. The enemy that had seemed invincible a moment earlier was actually in a hopeless situation.
Katie thought back to Patchâs birth and all of his medical problems. The situation had seemed hopeless, but Patch had come out of it fine. God had worked behind the scenes to save her son, and Katie had come out of it much more serious about her faith.
During the past few years she had been trying with increasing persistence to convince Jack to return to his faith. The things that Jackâs father had said in the hospital so many years earlier had come back to her as she got older. Life was fleeting. Neither she nor Jack was bulletproof. She was determined to do all that she could to ensure that her family would be all right, not just in this life but in the next one.
Katie closed the book. Lord, I know youâre out there working behind the scenes, but I sure wish youâd work a little faster on Jack. Deep inside, he still loves you. I know he does.
