“CASH WILL BE OUT IN A MINUTE, so relax and get comfortable in the Jacuzzi,” a technician said the next afternoon. “Try to pretend we’re not here, Edie.”

Yeah, right. The blue string-bikini Miranda had chosen for Marley to wear was so insubstantial that it could untie itself and drift away in the hot tub currents with all of America watching. Squinting into lights bright enough to illuminate a football stadium, Marley took a final glance around the Upper East Side spa club where they were taping, taking in the crews setting up cameras all around her, and then she shut her eyes and thought, A cop.

She should have guessed. Cash’s previous employment explained the wary caution she’d seen in his eyes and the sense of danger she’d felt. It accounted for the animal grace of his body, too, not to mention the license he’d shown her that allowed him to own a gun, albeit, she suspected, not to carry it.

His story checked out. She wasn’t proud of it, but she’d called the New Orleans Police Department this morning. Not only was she told Cash had been an officer before leaving to open his club, but the woman to whom she’d spoken had taken Marley’s name and number, apologizing profusely because Cash’s ex-partner, Sam Beaujolais, was on vacation and couldn’t take her call. As near as Marley could tell, everyone adored Cash.

Annie Dean had returned Marley’s previous call, and while she’d seemed suspicious of Marley’s story—Marley said she was a New York lifestyles writer interested in covering Bourbon Street’s nightlife—the manager had confirmed that Cash owned the Cash Cow, which was all Marley had wanted to know.

Despite the shake-up at the Darden’s yesterday morning, all Marley’s suspicions seemed silly now. A cop, she thought again. She felt as if a veil had been removed, exposing her for the worrisome idiot she’d become since Chris had left. Not that she was going to beat herself up about that, either. She’d worked so hard, not only at her business, but trying to forge a relationship that would last, one that mirrored the closeness her own folks shared. She’d hoped she and Chris could start a family….

“Here,” someone said, breaking her reverie. “Cash is on his way out, Edie, and we need to touch up your eye makeup. It’s melting under the lights. Don’t worry about getting your face wet. Everything’s waterproof.”

Dutifully, she raised her chin, sighing as she remembered once more how hard she’d worked to build Fancy Abs. Maybe because she was a twin, she’d wanted to build something all her own, and while Chris had known about the deeper significance she’d attached to her business, that hadn’t stopped him from taking money she’d saved for a key expansion. Seeing his self-centeredness hurt more than anything. Besides, whatever success she’d had was for their future. As a tennis instructor, Chris was never going to earn as much as her. Only after their marriage had she realized he never would have become a full partner.
