Chapter Three

“You okay?”

“Fine,” Lacey answered, not sure which of the bridesmaids had asked. When she’d joined them in the girls’ cabin, the women were freshening their makeup. Soon they’d meet the guys at the arch overlooking a gorgeous view of the Blue Ridge mountains. Mind still on Luke, Lacey smoothed on a fresh coat of lipstick, then stared at herself in the mirror.

Staring at her reflection, she pulled out the clips holding her hair and shook out the shoulder length waves, combed her fingers through it, then gave herself one last look before heading out with the other bridesmaids.

“No fair, Lace. You aren’t supposed to outshine the bride,” Kevin said when they joined the guys.

“No worries. Just wait until you see Brianna,” Lacey assured, her gaze unable to keep from straying to Luke. “Her parents stopped by our cabin and plan to walk over with her.”

On cue, the bride and her parents joined them, and the wedding coordinator morphed into a five-star general, ordering everyone to take their places.

“Kevin’s right you know,” Luke said later when they were standing to the side of the activities, awaiting further instructions from the coordinator who was currently discussing possible seating arrangement changes.

“Ha. You’re just over here escaping Mandy. I saw her chatting you up a few minutes ago.” A green knife of jealousy had slashed through her as she’d watched the woman openly flirt with Luke. “Not interested, I take it?”

He shook his head. “No, but she wasn’t taking the hint.”

“Maybe you should bluntly tell her you aren’t interested,” she suggested, relief hitting her. She hadn’t thought he was, but he’d been smiling and kind, much as he’d done with Lacey herself, so she hadn’t been sure.

“I did. She didn’t seem fazed.”

“Oh. Sorry.” She met his gaze. “She is pretty, though.”

“She is, but she’s not my type.”

“Pretty isn’t your type?”

He laughed. “Let’s just say that it takes more than a pretty face to impress me.”

“Okay, now you have me curious. What is your type?”

“Smart. Funny. Loyal. Hard-working. Successful. Beautiful. Stubborn—”

“Stubborn?” she interrupted, arching her brow at him. “Stubborn is your type?”

He chuckled. “Apparently.”

Her throat tightened as the truth hit her. “It sounds as if you’re describing someone you know.”

His gaze held hers. “You think?”

Oh goodness. He was. Lacey bit into her lower lip and she swallowed back her disappointment. “She’s a lucky woman. You’re a great guy.”

“I’m glad you think so.”

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier when we were talking about this?” She sounded accusatory, but she couldn’t hold back the questions.

He shrugged. “Because there’s not anything to tell. I’m not in a relationship.”

“But there is someone you’d like to be in a relationship with?” Which one of his exes still held his heart?

“Yes, but there were reasons we couldn’t be together. Those reasons don’t seem important anymore.”

“Is she why you’re moving back to Atlanta?”

He considered her question a moment. “I hadn’t consciously admitted that to myself, but yes, I believe she played a role in my wanting to come home. The opportunity to transfer was timely.
