S ince all of them had been born into royalty, they never understood dealing with day-to-day mundane tasks, such as discarding and cleaning out their daily ablution buckets. An attendant in the castle always took care of those things. Since being imprisoned, however, it was left up to them. After a few days of all five family members sharing the same bucket, they realized no one would be dealing with it and asked their guards to allow one of them to do so. Alaria took it upon herself. It was definitely unpleasant, but in time, she appreciated the chance to walk outside of their cell to an outside pit where all manner of slop was either burned, buried, or fed to the pigs. It gave her a bit of outdoor air, which was most welcome from the dark cell she shared with her family.
About a week after her mother had died was the first time Alaria left their prison without the bucket. Her father was stunned when guards came to escort her away. Having no idea where they were taking her, he began to protest and demand they take him instead.
Alaria looked at her father and said, âNo, Father, I asked to go out. Do not worry. I will be back in a while, and things will be better from now on.â Then she stood up straight and walked out with the guards, not looking back at her father lest she cry.
There was nothing else to do but hold Soria to his chest. The king died a little more. He was defeated. This was the lowest he had felt, as he could no longer take care of his own daughter. He wept into Soriaâs hair.
Alaria had worked out a deal with Banton. He could sell her to whomever he wanted to. There would be a daily limit of three men, and sheâd have two days off a week to spend with her father and sister. He would keep the gold and share with her a few trinkets from the profit, but more than that, her family would be moved to a room with windows, clean bedding and clothes, a way to clean themselves regularly, and palatable food and water. The guard was a little surprised when the princess approached him with the idea. He looked her filthy body up and down, but thought if cleaned up a bit, she would attract men with more money. He could easily sell her in this condition also, but if he kept a better clientele, she would fetch more and last longer. He also knew the first buyer would be paying the most for unspoiled goods, from a princess no less, and would set out in search of the highest bidder.
Banton held no love for King Traintor and no ill will toward Oshinor. He had even worked for Bracknor as one of the former kingâs protectors. Once he learned Bracknor had fled the castle, he threw his sword into the ring for Traintor. He wanted to be on the side that paid, and at this point, that was Traintor.
