Chapter 21

73. Sallying at Katz’s

“What the hell is this?”

Jodie woke up to a raging hangover and an even more raging Hurricane Cheryl. Jodie couldn’t get a handle on Cheryl. Sometimes she was polished and minty fresh, sometimes fiery and insecure, sometimes kind, and sometimes (like now) explosive. Jodie wondered who she was underneath. Because a lot of the time she seemed to put all her energy into performing, into being someone she wasn’t. Someone who would impress Sir Ryan Lasseter, Jodie guessed, judging by the way Cheryl fell over herself around him.

When Hurricane Cheryl blew in, Jodie had stumbled out of bed to find she was still fully clothed in her black jersey dress and tights. She’d fallen asleep after Kelly had left, too boozy to even climb out of her clothes.

“Jodie!” Cheryl was there at an ungodly hour. The minute Jodie opened the door, she found Cheryl’s phone shoved in her face. “What the hell?!”

The “hell” in question was an Instagram post featuring Jodie and Tish at the restaurant the night before. It was a video post, no less, in which Jodie was kissing Tish passionately on the cheeks, European style, like the good Sir himself. Cheryl turned the volume up.

“You’re better than amazing. You’re the best,” Jodie-in-the-video was saying fervently.

“Who took that?” Jodie said now, peering blearily at the screen.

“Someone at the damn restaurant.” Cheryl shook the phone at Jodie. “It’s gone viral!”

“Really? Why? It’s not very interesting.” Jodie couldn’t work out why Cheryl was so upset. Was it because she’d got so drunk? Jodie felt a little embarrassed about it. And a lot sick from it.

“People think you’re a couple!”

Wait. Was Cheryl jealous?

“They what?” She was. She was poisonously jealous. Jodie’s head hurt. Cheryl’s screeching wasn’t helping matters.

“They think you’re a couple.” Cheryl played the video again.

“Oh.” OK. Looking at the video again, Jodie could see why people could think that. Especially with the way she was showering Tish with those “European kisses.” Hell, those cocktails had been a really bad idea. Everything after that had been an inevitable downward spiral.

Except for When Harry Met Sally . . . Jodie remembered the way Kelly had stared into her eyes, only inches away, looking too kissable for words. That had been worth every second of this hangover.

“Look at the comments,” Cheryl growled. “People think Tish is going to be number one hundred on your list! Tish. My Tish!”

“Well, clearly she’s not, so I don’t know why you’re so angry.”

Cheryl glared at her. “I’m so angry because of Ryan.”

Ryan? What did Sir Ryan Lasseter have to do with anything?

“He thinks this is excellent,” Cheryl seethed. “He wants Tish to join us for the rest of the bucket list.”

“But that’s great.” Jodie brightened. “You two can spend time together!” Tish would be over the moon.

“No, you idiot, he wants you two to spend time together. He thinks this is marketing gold.”

“But you’ll be there too.”

“Jodie,” Cheryl said, clearly struggling, and failing, to control herself, “I was going to ask her to marry me.
