Changes in Birthrates

1 The current decline in birthrates will continue for a time. However, there remains a possibility that birthrates will return to the normal rising baseline in the eighties.

2 Nevertheless, although the birthrate may increase, it will not recover enough to maintain population numbers at the current level. A dramatic population decline in the future is now unavoidable.

Total Fertility Rate = the number of children each woman gives birth to during her fertile years (15–49).

1975: 1.91

1979: 1.77

(It is said that if the Total Fertility Rate were to be hypothetically maintained at 2.1, by 2025 population increases and decreases would stop, and the population would achieve stability.)
