She didn’t reply, and I hoped she wouldn’t do anything to get in trouble. But Brielle would do what she wanted, and there wasn’t much I could do about it except limit the damage.

My desk phone rang, and I cringed when I saw my boss’s number on the display. Guess I had to do this eventually.

As soon as I picked up the receiver, he yelled down the line, “Kinsley. My office. Now.”

He hung up before I got a word out.

I gathered my files and made sure my computer was locked. Then I took slow, measured steps to his office at the other end of the floor, hoping to delay my upcoming ass chewing for a bit longer.

I knocked on his door before entering. He didn’t look up when I walked inside, and I stopped in front of his desk with my folder clutched to my chest.

“Your performance over the last few weeks has been patchy at best.”

He still wasn’t looking up. I shifted from one foot to the other. This would be bad. I just hoped by the end of it I’d still have a job.

“I let you take time off,” he continued. “I let you take sick days.”

I swallowed. This really wouldn’t end well.

“And you’re always running late. How many times have I told you that you need to be here five minutes before work starts?”

“I’m really sorry, Mr. Lansing. I promise—”

“Not another word.”

I shut up immediately.

“Your ass is in the office half an hour early from now on. If you’re even a minute later, you’re done. You’ll not only work on the analysis for the Rupert deal but also the Merlin one. If you’re late for either one of those, you’re done. If you take one more sick day, you’re done. Do I make myself clear?”

Well, now this was worse than I thought. He always liked to yell, but threatening to fire me was new. It wasn’t like I loved my job, but I needed to pay my bills. Or at least partly pay them. Because there were a lot of them.

“Yes, sir,” I replied.

“Why are you still standing there? Get out.”

I turned on my heels and fled. The walk back to the sanctuary of my office was a blur. I knew I was screwed when I didn’t even stop at the kitchen and make myself a cup of coffee.

I dropped into my chair and dumped the folders on my desk. My forehead thumped on top of the pile. This was bad. So bad. I needed this job.

I pulled my phone out of my desk drawer and messaged Brielle.
