From a deathly still place, Owen’s consciousness came rising. He grew aware that he was lying on the cold ground. He felt drained of energy, as if he had no desire to live. Looking upward into the night sky, he thought that the stars were sickening. They seemed to be sucking the life force from his body through the black holes of his eyes.

Yet the green lights were rising from the ground. He watched their fantastic forms as they swayed upwards. Their energy seemed to buoy him up and give him strength. After a moment, Owen sat up and looked around.

Close by on the dirt road, his brother Harley was stretched out, stirring. When their eyes met, Harley smiled, shook his head, and looked around him.

Owen noticed the bus was gone. He stood and searched horizon to horizon, seeing nothing except seas of floating green lights. They were alone on the country road that climbed the foothills.

“What happened?” Owen asked.

Harley coughed and said, “He knocked us out. He must have taken Kate and Constance and Axel too. I think that he must still be headed north for the highlands.”

“What does he want with Kate and Constance?”

Harley stood. “Man I’m glad the field is thick tonight,” he muttered to himself, and then he said, “Nothing with Kate, I don’t think. He wants Constance. And he wanted you.”

“What for?”

“His tribe. He needs soldiers. Constance could fight for him. So could you. Kate’s useless to him.”

“Why not leave her and take me, then?”

“Because you were challenging him. I think he decided you were too hard. The two of us together, two brothers, was too much. He probably thinks Constance and Axel are . bendable. Come on, let’s get moving north. We gotta follow the son of a bitch. I need some time to teach you a few things before we meet any of the other groups.”

Harley and Owen began to hike north. The motion of walking comforted Owen. It gave him strength to be walking in company with his brother. He didn’t feel afraid; he felt angry and determined.

“What the hell is going on, Harley? And how did you get down here?”

“Shut up, Owen,” Harley said. “Why do you insist on talking?”

—Get a clue, Harley’s voice said within Owen’s head. It’s like you insist on playing checkers, and the game is chess. Things have changed. Why don’t you change? Are you stupid?

—It’s my world, Owen heard his inner voice answering. I won’t give it up without a fight. Nobody can take it away —

—Nobody is taking it away, you idiot. The world just changed. It doesn’t have a damn thing to do with you except that you’re in it. Now deal with it, won’t you?

—I am dealing with it.

Harley’s communication with Owen took on a more profound force. It went beyond words. Owen sensed Harley’s fury. He was bitterly angry, not at Owen, but at what he thought was the weakness in Owen. For the first time, Owen began to understand his brother’s attitude.
