CHAPTER ELEVEN

Augustin Slyvester Williams, a mask across his face, looked through tinted windows from the back of his SUV at those that were running from the smoke which bellowed out of the ground floor of the department store. He shook his head. He wondered if he should order Ramses to shoot them. An act of mercy. This new world wasn’t a place for those that set their sights so low. They were stealing brand names. Sneakers, bags, jackets. Nothing that would keep them warm or alive in the coming days or years. They wouldn’t even be able to trade them for food. Once the flames across what was left of the city had gone cold, these pitiful souls would end up burning these garments to keep themselves warm while radiation ate them alive.

He took in and let out a long breath then looked to his bodyguard in the driver’s seat. “How much longer?”

The muscular individual in the front, glanced at his watch. “Fifteen minutes.”

“Let’s go.”

Ramses fired up the engine of the vehicle which had been in an area below a parking garage until thirty minutes ago, and eased down on the accelerator, weaving around an abandoned sedan and narrowly missing a man holding a bundle of clothes. As they drove at a slow but steady pace through the once busy streets, other figures could be seen wandering amongst the smog which blanketed everything. To the head of the River Gang, they looked like phantoms. Beings which existed between worlds.

To August, running prostitution, drugs and illegal gambling amongst the high flying elites of metropolitan Chicago had been incredibly lucrative, but it was a means to an ends. The end being, well… literally the end. His father had been former military and then became a survivalist and would take young August out into the mountains for weeks at a time, teaching him how to fish, make a fire and filtrate water. But more than those skills, he instilled in his son the idea that one day those abilities would be needed. That eventually society would break down and then it would be the toughest and most informed that would survive. So as he made his way through university, selling drugs and running girls, he kept one eye on world events and when he had the money to do so, would invest in buildings and goods that could be hidden away. He broke the law on a daily basis so being secretive was second nature to him and his organisation was ready for when the pandemic hit.

He shut down the entire Chicago operation. Telling his lieutenants to stay at home. He even paid them to do so. Some still ran their own scams. Those were the ones that got ill. But by the time the eleven week virus had run its course through the population, only twenty-three of three hundred and ten that made up his crew had gotten sick. They didn’t know it at the time but he had saved all of their lives.
