Kareena's mood had reached a new low. The constant roller coaster of euphoria and despair had taken another turn and ruined all joy about meeting Iesco again and finally arriving on Aurora.

In particular, she had definitely imagined the reunion with Iesco differently.

Soberly considered, she did not have the slightest reason to be sad or displeased. What had she expected? That he would not look at another woman for six years? Complete nonsense! If it had been just affairs, as she had been, she would probably have been all right. Somehow, though, she had hoped that she was be special to him. As he was to her. There had indeed been one special woman in his life, but it had not been Kareena. Iesco was not to blame for that. She had made the decision then to prioritize her career at Cynarian over a relationship with him. She had left him a free man, free to find a new mate at any time. Which he had done.

Jasi. It was she who held a special place in his life. Not Kareena. Even though they had since parted ways, their child together was a bond that went far beyond any mark Kareena had left on his life.

Actually, she wasn't mad at him at all. Rather at herself. At the fact that she had let him go. At the fact that she had reserved a special place for him in her heart. At the fact that she had given herself over to the confused illusion that he would see this in a similar way.

She took a deep breath. She had lost count how many times the same thoughts had spun around in her head. And each time she came to the same conclusion: she was to blame for her own misery. And that was exactly what made it worse. If she could have blamed anyone else with a clear conscience, preferably Iesco, it would have been easier to bear. But he had nothing to blame himself for. And she certainly had nothing to blame him for. She had screwed up all by herself. She had gambled away her entire life. Or at least set the wrong priorities. And hadn't even noticed all this time. Only now, when her subliminal hope of the last six years, always denied by herself, had vanished into thin air, she recognized the truth. She realized what she really wanted. What was really important to her. And that she could not have exactly that.

What remained was the question of how to proceed now. She already had an answer for that, too: just like in the last few years. Just like she had proceeded her whole life. What remained for her was Cynarian. The career. The job. The very thing that had blocked her path to Iesco back then.

She shook herself. She had to finally get her mind off things. Concentrate on the work again.

The work.

If there was at least a glimmer of hope in the completion of her current assignment, it might help her get over her private disaster.
