Gayle pulled up to the resort, pleased with the look of it. Many years had passed since she traveled for work. But Chelsea didn't leave much room for debate. She wanted someone to “help Lily” with the Breckenridge project. More like keep an eye and spy on her.

Despite her reputation as the office busy-body, the assignment made Gayle uncomfortable. She liked Lily. But she couldn't afford to lose her job.

Chelsea had specifically said not to warn Lily of her impending arrival. She didn’t want any back-and-forth on the matter.

Gayle looked around, realizing the last time she’d been to Colorado was forty-odd years ago. Landing in Denver stirred up strange and mixed feelings. So much had changed, yet the scenery looked exactly how she remembered it.

Growing up in Denver, she saved up to join her friends in Breck to ski each winter. Summer, however, had a whole different feel. Less crowded than in the colder months, it made it easier for Gayle to score a last-minute hotel reservation at the Grand Timber Lodge.

At the front desk, a young man who reminded her of a California surfer greeted her.

“How can I help you, ma'am?” he asked, more politely than she would have expected. Clearly, they were training their staff well.

“I’m checking in.”

She gave him her driver’s license and five minutes later received her key. “Can you tell me the room number of my friend who is staying here?”

“Not sure we’re supposed to give out that information.” He leaned in. “But if you care to leave a tip . . .”

Gayle blinked repeatedly, unsure she’d heard him correctly. “Excuse me?”

The office door opened behind him. A woman with a manager tag on her shirt said, “Welcome to Breckenridge!”

The young man stood back, practically rolling his eyes at the interruption. His earlier demeanor now seemed a well-practiced performance. “I just checked her in. She’d like her friend’s room number.”

The woman asked Gayle, “Who is your friend?”

“Lily Randolph.”

The young man paled. “You’re her friend?”

“Yes, is there a problem?”

The manager stiffened, pursing her lips. “I'll handle this,” she told the young man who stepped away.

To Gayle, the woman said, “No problem at all. But perhaps it’s best if you call Ms. Randolph. We are not permitted to give out guest room information.”

“All right.”

“We’ll have someone help you with your bags.”

“Thanks,” Gayle said, wondering what on earth all that was about.

She would ask Lily as soon as she tracked her down.
