Here is a professional game that demonstrates this point perfectly. It is Sakata Eiou vs. Rin Kaiho, two very strong players. Black plays 9 through 13 to force White down. Note the jump at White 14, this is so he does not get shut out of the upper right side of the board (envision what would happen if Black gets to seal). Black’s wall on the outside does not surround territory of its own, while White can easily point to the board and say “I’ve got points”. What is Black to do?
Black attacked White at 1, removing its ability to make a base along the left side (notice how this move is low). White runs out into the center so that it can strengthen itself, as the center is the only open space left nearby. Now Black’s wall in the upper side of the board is doing its job, it’s forcing which direction White can play his stones. Black keeps pace with Black 3 because he wants to make sure that White remains squeezed. White jumps again with 4, and Black peeps at 5 (note Black’s weak two space shape above). White of course blocks, and then Black attacks White again with 7! This is like one of those chase scenes out of a horror movie, where the poor heroine is trying to run out of the forest while the werewolf is chasing her down. She runs just long enough to think she got away, and then out of nowhere the monster appears right in front of her. Black 7 and 9 keep up the pressure, because again, White does not have a base. Black 7 and 9 are useful for developing the right side of the board at a later point in time. At the end of it all, Black plays 11 and makes a nice amount of potential territory in the lower left. This is what attacking is all about, pressuring your opponent while you play stones that are useful for taking territory or creating potential. Use attacking to direct the flow of the game to your advantage. Prepare for your attacks. Now let’s move to another fun part of the middle game, invasions!
