Chapter 20

Harlow: Bishop, are you there?

Harlow: Please tell me you’re awake.

Harlow: Nobody’s answering their phones and I don’t know who else to call.

Bishop: What’s wrong? Are you okay?

Harlow: Oh, I’m so glad you’re up.

Bishop: I never turn my ringer off in case something happens with Daisy. Is everything okay?

Harlow: Yes? No? I don’t know. I’m on this really weird date and I kind of need a ride. Or just like maybe a buffer? I’m not sure.

Bishop: What’s going on? You’ve had a lot of weird dates and not sounded freaked out like this.

Harlow: He’s just being really persistent about making sure I get home all right.

Bishop: Okay? That sounds like a good thing.

Harlow: But he won’t let me just get an Uber. He wants to come all the way home with me. I keep telling him he doesn’t have to, but he keeps insisting.

Bishop: Are there other people around? Can you tell the staff or somebody that he won’t leave you alone and you need help until I get there? I’m getting my keys. Just send me the address.

Harlow: No, I mean, it’s not that bad. I’m probably making too much out of it.

Bishop: Where are you? Are you safe right now?

Harlow: I’m in the bathroom at the bar.

Bishop: Okay, good. Start at the beginning and tell me what the deal is with this guy.

Harlow: Well, I found him on the app. His screen name is an inside joke from The Office, so I thought that was cool. Real name’s Todd. Date went great, he was funny, I was a little tipsy. He’s a big guy, used to play football, so we were joking about all the weird stuff with college sports and what they make you do when you’re on scholarship. I was really ready for a date to go well, you know? So when he asked if I wanted to grab one more drink after dinner, I said sure! Anyway, we get to talking and boom, it’s one in the morning.

Harlow: I take his # for a second date, but when I go to leave, he wants to see me home. As in drop me at my door even though he lives in the opposite direction and neither of us drove here. He was being really sweet about it. He says his mom raised him to see a lady home, especially if it’s this late. But Bishop, I told him a bunch of times I don’t need him to do that, and he’s not budging.

Bishop: I don’t like that you told him no and he’s still on this.

Harlow: I know, me too. And I’m kind of like, if he’s pushy now, once we’re alone in front of my building, then what? So on the one hand I don’t want to blow it if this could go somewhere with us. The date did go really well, and it’s not crazy that he’d want to see me home safely. On the other hand, if he is a creep, by the time I know for sure I’ll be on a dark street with no one else around.
