CHAPTER TEN

The day had finally arrived! Zooey sat in Doctor Fullerton’s tiny, closet-sized office in the Undead Ward, moments away from getting her next Z-shot. The aches would dissipate, the crave for brains would fade into the background for a while, and she could have a few days of feeling like herself again. Maybe with the higher dose it’d be a whole week even. She was feeling hopeful for a change.

Zooey ran a hand through her hair, detangling her long waves with her fingertips whenever they snagged on a knot. She knew she wasn’t looking her best. So much had gone on since she was released from rehab that her looks were low on her list of priorities, especially when most days it was a struggle just to get out of bed. She used the excuse that she shared a communal bathroom with dozens of Undead and the only mirror available to her was a dingy, stained one hanging crooked above the yellowed sink. But when she thought about it, she really hadn’t put much effort into herself when she was at her apartment either. She wore the same clothes for days on end now that she was living out of a small backpack. Most of her clothes were wrinkled. She made sure to stop at a local laundromat every few days but money was tight since she still hadn’t found a job. She tried not to think about those things, though.

“And how has life been going for you since I last saw you, Miss Beckett? Sorry about the confusion with your Z-shot. That was a stupid beurocratic mistake from the higher ups on the Ward’s end. Won’t happen again,” Doctor Fullerton said in his soothing, pleasant voice. Zooey looked into his icy blue eyes, wrinkled in the corners from his smile.

She shrugged her shoulders and sighed as she made the effort to straighten up and participate. “It’s been fine.” Vagueness was always best.

Doctor Fullerton had been poised and prepared to write notes but instead he set his pen down on his notepad. “You know, if you’re not open and honest with me, Zooey, this isn’t going to work. I’m here to help you adjust and live your best life, to help figure out improvements in a medicine that benefits you. Please. Give me something to work with.” His eyes turned down with sincerity. He leaned ever so slightly forward with anticipation.

Zooey gave another sigh, still unsure whether she could trust the doctor, if he was really on the side of the Undead or if he was just following orders of a government sector that wanted to figure out how to control the Undead. She’d never know for sure. I guess I could give him something, she finally decided, but she would remain careful. “I still have aches when I wake up. They get worse the longer it’s been since my shot.”

This seemed to spark interest in the doctor. He scribbled on his notepad, making sure to shift his eyes back to her to urge her on.
