KING OF THE GYPSIES

I had began to think that I was doing okay, and that my career was on course and going as well as could be expected, although I had always been very impatient. I now felt that I had started to carve a niche for myself, and in retrospect I believe that complacency was beginning to set in. Then an incident occurred that changed my whole perspective on the subject. One Sunday morning one of the downstairs tenants called to me, and told Jean and I that there were two men at the front door asking for me. I imagined that they would be either family or wrestlers, as they would be the only people who would know where we lived. So before I even knew who was inquiring after me, I called them both up to our flat. I didn’t recognize either of them as they entered so I introduced myself to them, and then felt the hair on the back of my neck prickle as I recognized their very course Pikey accents when they introduced themselves to me. Immediately a picture appeared in my mind’s eye of ‘Airy the Gypo, in the crimson splattered, white tiled cinema toilet. Lying in a pool of his own blood and piss. I wondered if he and his grotesque elephantine Mother had since acquired a TV for the dirty tarpaulin tent they called home. Had maybe seen me wrestling on it, and had put two and two together, and worked out that I had been the lethal avalanche, that had engulfed him mid piss. And that these two Gypsy detectives had at last tracked me down on his behalf. As if to confirm my worst fears, one of my Gypsy visitors came straight to the point when I asked him the reason for their visit.

“We want to arrange a fight between a wrestler and our own Gypsy Champion.” He told me.

“How much will I get paid, and who do I have to fight?” I asked, believing that I already knew who my opponent would turn out to be.

“Oh no, its not you, who we want to fight our Man,” he replied with a smile, “its Mike Marino, we want him to fight against Uriah Burton ‘King of the Gypsies,’ bare-knuckle, all-in Champion.”

“Why are you asking me?” I inquired, “I’m not Mike Marino’s bloody manager.”

“We went to Dale Martin’s wrestling promotions, but they wouldn’t tell us how we could get in touch with him,” The other Gypsy explained, “so we came to see if you could ask Mike Marino for us instead?”

“Tell him that if he accepts the challenge we’ll pay him 1,000 pounds for an all in, no holds barred fight against our champion.” The first Gypsy declared.

Now they had my full and undivided attention!

“Never mind about Mike Marino,” I blurted, “I’ll fight your King of the Gypsies and the fucking Queen of them too for 1,000 pounds!!!”

The Gypsies both smiled at that, but the first Gypsy replied,
