We walked toward Mount Xar'roc all day, but it never seemed to get any closer. Off in the distance, I could see dust clouds rolling along on the plains to the northeast.

"There is the caravan from Thora,” said Lorthredo. “We should make it to them by the end of tomorrow.”

The next day, we came upon old abandoned buildings made of mud. The caravan was now only a mile or two ahead. None of us wanted to stop or rest as close to the finish line as we were. It took us less than an hour until we finally made it to the rear of the caravan.

Demtrius and I were again chained.

The caravan had been out for three weeks when we met up with them. Lorthredo and Montaug were readily welcomed and we were allowed to recuperate in the back of one of the wagons for the day. We accompanied the caravan for two more days, eating and relaxing the entire way. All the while, the mountain grew closer and so much larger.

On the third day, we heard a shout from the front of the caravan. The fairgrounds were just ahead. We had finally made it to the base of Mount Xar'roc; to the People's Fair.

Then, as if pulled out of some daze, I thought, What next? I had begun to enjoy my time here on Tatora, but now I would have to fight for my life against formidable beasts that wanted nothing more than to rip my head off and eat the meat off my bones. I should have run when I had the chance, but then Lorthredo and Montaug would have received a similar fate for losing me, and I just couldn’t let that happen.
