Chapter 13

Mila woke slowly, a heavy grogginess hanging over her. She definitely wasn’t ready to be awake, but she was warm. Then she remembered last night, how they’d found the evidence they needed, and a smile spread over her face. She’d gotten her third Christmas miracle. She silently said a prayer of thanks. She stretched out, extending her legs and reaching her arms over her head. Her elbow pushed into something soft and pliable, shoving it to the right.

A deep, gruff groan came from beside her, under her.

Her eyes flew open, her sight blurred from sleep. Underneath her sprawled-out frame, another larger frame lay nearly still, the only movement from its chest as it breathed in and out slowly.

Her sight cleared, and Alec came into view. She lay half on him, half on the couch, one of her legs stretched across both of his. She had her arm across his taut abs, and she had her head on his chest below his clavicle. He had one of his massive arms wrapped around her back, holding her down with its substantial weight, the other hanging off the end of the couch where they lay.

His stubble came in thick now, the five-o’clock shadow long forgotten, and his dark lashes fanned over his cheek. Her gaze darted to the scar that cut deep through his right eyebrow. He twitched under her, still fast asleep, his grip tightening on her back. Little flutters shot through her stomach. Before she could overthink it, she gave in to a temptation that had been lingering at the back of her mind since she’d met him: she reached up and touched that scar.

How had he gotten that? Did she want to know?

She shook her head and pulled her hand back. She didn’t. What had she been doing? In fact, what on earth was happening? She tried to clear her mind, tried to figure out how she’d ended up like this—sprawled across Alec. And where was she? And briefly, how many hours did Alec spend in the gym to achieve this kind of build?

She glanced around. Stone walls and stairs behind glass, bookshelves lined up and down the room, and two tables stacked up with books. She blinked. Right, she was in the archive.

Freddie and Jack were nowhere to be seen.

A sense of urgency shot through her, but she wasn’t sure why—her mind was still fuzzy. She pushed herself up and off Alec. His grip tightened, and his other hand lifted and wrapped around her, pulling her back to his chest.

“Oof!” The air shot out of her.

His eyes didn’t open. His breathing stayed calm.

“Alec,” she whispered.

She squirmed down and out from under his arms, then tried to free herself of the blanket they were both wrapped in—the one she’d given him yesterday, the one he’d brought with him down into the archive. It was wrapped over her and tucked under Alec, trapping her.

She groaned. How could he sleep so deeply? She yanked as hard as she could on the soft fabric.
