âHow do you view the year ahead of you? With anticipation? With dread? Or maybe you donât give it much thought. Have you set any resolutions or any goals for the year ahead?â
Church. It had become the anchor in my week. And the start of Benâs preach had me wanting to hear more. The past week had been a hard one. The salon had been too quiet.
âI want to read you a verse I read during the week,â continued Ben. ââMay the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.â And those words are from the book of Romans chapter fifteen verse thirteen.â
I glanced up to the screen behind Ben where the words were displayed. That one verse seemed to encapsulate so much of what I needed to hear. As soon as I made the decision to start my own salon, there had been peace but in the day-to-day reality of starting a business it was easy to lose peace and worry about the balance sheet. But even though worry tried to creep in, there were times of hope and joy. Hopefully that peace and joy was for my future with Kirsty too.
After church, Matt, Kirsty, Jo, Lynn and Carol and myself went out for lunch. I wasnât sure if it was my imagination or if Kirsty seemed a bit more relaxed. Over soup and crusty bread we talked about the upcoming ski holiday and our first week back at work.
âMy week was so slow,â I informed the group. âBut yesterdayâs mail brought a surprise. Iâve been put forward for an award.â
âThatâs amazing,â said Kirsty. âWhat for?â
âItâs for the styling I did last year on the Raincoats & Sunglasses fashion shoot.â
Kirsty started giggling. âAnd you hate raincoats and sunglasses.â
âNot as much as I used too.â I secretly smiled at the blush that crept up Kirstyâs face. âThe awards event is at the end of the month. Brian and Trish will be coming with me but Iâve got a ticket for one more person and I was hoping you would come with me, Kirsty.â
Her fading blush burst back into vivid colour as the other girls giggled and nudged each other. âThat would be lovely, thank you. Iâve never been to an awards ceremony before. Whatâs involved?â
âItâs at City Hotel. There will be a big dinner, the awards will be given out and then itâll finish with some dancing. The only thing is, itâs a Sunday night, will that be okay?â
âNo problem. It sounds very sophisticated. I wonder if Iâll be able to find a hairdresser for a Sunday appointment.â
âI can always check if Brian or Trish have any slots.â As we continued to joke about the evening, the others were watching our interaction with interest. Maybe it hadnât been the best idea to ask her in front of everyone. But it wasnât a date. A hairdressing event was not how I imagined my first date with Kirsty.
