Snow Angels

“Ready to wake her?” The voice sounded hollow, as if coming from a long, empty corridor.

“Give her a minute. I think she’s coming around on her own,” another voice said, this one sounded familiar.

“We’re running low on a few supplies.”

The words swirled around in Izzy’s head, sounding cryptic and foreign.

“I’ll make sure to review the first aid inventory and order what we need.”

Light filtered through the darkness and Izzy shifted, peeling open her eyes. Mitch stood nearby but remained out of focus. She blinked a few times. Bright light hurt her eyes, and she squeezed them shut again. The pungent odor of antiseptic permeated the air, along with the faint scent of adhesive bandages.

“Looks like Sleeping Beauty is waking,” the unfamiliar voice announced.

Izzy shifted, stretching, and then realization struck. She wasn’t at the end of the ski slope anymore. Had she fainted? She bolted upright, her head swam in circles, and the room spun and tilted.

“Stay down, Izzy.” Hands, gentle yet firm pressed her back down.

Mitch.

“Tell me I didn’t.” Izzy took a steadying breath.

“You did.”

Humiliation stole her dignity, and she curled onto her side, turning away from him. “Where am I?” she asked, keeping her eyes closed.

“You’re on the examination table. In the first aid room.”

She groaned, placing her palms across her eyes. “How long was I out?”

“Long enough for me to carry you inside, retrieve and store our skis, change my clothes and get back here.”

“You carried me?” She imagined herself limp in his arms as he toted her into headquarters. A new wave of embarrassment washed over her. “Of course you did,” she answered her own question. “I guess I should thank you.”

He pressed his warm hand in hers and squeezed. “You’re welcome.”

“Who were you talking to?”

“Dan,” the other man stated. “We’ve passed by each other many times, but we haven’t officially been introduced.”

Izzy peeked to the side. A familiar round-headed, cheery-eyed man peered back. “I recognize you. You’re here sometimes on the weekends.”

“That’s right. Every third weekend to be exact. Well, I’m heading out now. Need anything before I go?”

Mitch stepped away and rummaged through a small refrigerator. “I’ll look after her. See you later. Thanks.”

“No problem.”

“So,” Mitch began, stepping close and pressing a cold compress to her forehead, “feeling better?”

“Well, I’m conscious. That’s an improvement, right?”

Mitch’s lighthearted chuckle brought a smile to her face. “It is a step in the right direction.”

Izzy took the cloth from him and lifted her head. “I want to get up.”

“Try sitting first.” He grasped her elbow, helping her ease into a sitting position. “That’s far enough for now.”

She shifted on the paper-covered plastic cushion, the crinkling noise making her feel like a patient in a physician’s office. So much for being part of the rescue team. Her heart sank. “I bet you’ve had a field day with your little red pen, checking all kinds of boxes. I wouldn’t blame you. After passing out, I deserve it.”

“Those would be X marks, not checks. But, you handled the situation well today…for the most part.
