Walter had started to remove his clothes by the time I got up to his room, and I closed his door behind me. He had his broad back turned towards me and I slowly walked over to him, placing the things on his bed and lightly kissing in between his shoulder blades. I could still feel Walterâs tensed muscles and I slowly reached down with my hands to unfurl his tightly closed fists.
âItâs okay,â I said softly against the skin on his back.
He let me unclench his fists and I wrapped my arms around his waist as he stood there still. I leaned my forehead against his taunt back and closed my eyes.
âWhat got into you back then?â I breathed.
Walter sighed and he paused for a while before answering.
âPhoenix knows how to get under my skin,â he replied, making me remember the comment about their father.
I rubbed his shoulder and pulled away from him, âHere. Lie down, Walter. Let me clean your wounds.â
Walter turned around and opened his mouth to decline, but I didnât let him. I shook my head and lightly pushed against his solid chest, making him sit down on the end of his large bed. He looked up at me and I smiled softly, threading my fingers through his thick hair.
âLie down,â I repeated with a smile.
Walter smiled back faintly and he moved so that he was lying down with his head resting on his pillows. I climbed onto the bed and sat down on his hips. Walter looked at me with slightly rounded eyes, but I looked past his surprise in order to not get embarrassed or shy all of a sudden. Taking one of the cotton pads, I moistened it with the disinfectant and then leaned over Walter so I could get a closer look at his battered face.
âSorry,â I murmured in advance before I gently wiped at a graze on his cheekbone, where he already had many faded scars.
Walter winced in pain and raised his hand to take hold of my wrist, stopping me. I leaned down further to plant a gentle kiss on his lips. I wanted to kiss him for longer, but I really didnât want to hurt him, so I pulled away too soon and then continued with cleaning his wounds.
âI donât think Phoenix meant what you thought he meant,â I said quietly as I cleaned a cut on his bottom lip.
Walter frowned in pain, confusion and probably more anger.
âWhat do you mean?â he asked me, after I had moved onto another graze under his eye.
âHe didnât say that you were like your dad,â I said to him. âHe said you reminded him of your dad sometimes, but that doesnât mean it was in a bad way.â
Walter scoffed, âWell he meant it in a bad way.â
âMaybe,â I considered it. âBut youâre not all bad. You have lots of good sides to you too, Walter.â
He sighed softly and closed his eyes. I didnât think he was even going to reply, until he opened his eyes again.
