It was gone eleven when they reached the hospital in Warwick. They were refused entrance, the nurse on duty telling them they could come back in the morning, but for now Mr Peters was sleeping. She went as far as to smile at Jason and assure him his great-uncle wasn’t about to expire overnight.

“His injuries are mostly superficial, and his heart is no more erratic now than it has been these past months.”

“Erratic?” Jason asked.

“Your great-uncle is an old man, Mr Morris,” the nurse replied. “Very old, even. Things wear down with age.”

“I wouldn’t know,” he muttered. He’d never experienced old age, having always opted to end his life once he’d given up on finding Helle in that time and age. Instead, he’d leapt forward to a new life, a new time, there to start his search anew.

“Not yet, you don’t,” the nurse said. “Someday, you will.” This was stated so matter-of-factly it almost made Jason smile.
