Mindfulness and Meditation

My first interest in the Alexander Technique came from a book I read when undertaking several years of intensive immersion in Buddhist mindfulness practice in Thailand. I was immediately intrigued by similarities between the two disciplines and decided that, when I had the chance, I would experience lessons in the Alexander Technique. The practice I was studying is based on the Satipatthana Sutta—The Foundations of Mindfulness—the opening lines of which summarize its approach.

This is the direct way, monks, for the purification of beings, for the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of pain and distress, for reaching the Noble Path, for the realization of Nibbana, (full enlightenment) namely, the Four Foundations of Mindfulness.

“A monk dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending and mindful, overcoming covetousness and grief in the world;

He dwells contemplating the feelings in the feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending and mindful, and putting aside greed and distress with reference to the world;

He dwells contemplating the states of mind in the states of mind, ardent, clearly comprehending and mindful, overcoming covetousness and grief in the world;

He dwells contemplating thoughts and perceptions in the thoughts and perceptions, ardent, clearly comprehending and mindful, overcoming covetousness and grief in the world.”
