3. Add credibility
The third element key to being persuasive is the need to make what is said convincing – credible to the listener. It is a fact that often many people have some inherent scepticism towards anyone being persuasive; why else do we say, “I wouldn’t buy a second-hand car from them”, and use it as an insult? People believe that the persuader is likely to have a vested interest, they believe that they need to be sceptical and, if a good point is made about something, their first reaction may be to think: “They would say that, wouldn’t they?” So, understandably enough, they want proof.
