Matching, sorting and counting small world animals encourages the development of mathematical skills.

Mathematics

Valuable activities might include inviting children to match baby and adult animals, to count how many of each creature and compare group sizes, to order animals by size and to sort them by colour or type. A slightly more challenging task would be to ask them to guess how many sheep will fit into the pen or how many hens in the coop, then to put the toys in and find out how close they were to the correct answer.

Adults can discuss with children questions such as: Which enclosure is nearest and which is furthest away from the house or the barn? How long will it take the farmer to walk, ride or drive to the cows? Which is the biggest field? What shapes are the pond, the fields and the farmhouse? How many bricks or other pieces will be needed to build strong walls to keep the bull safe?
