Michele: Iâm at my bedroom window looking at the cop car six floors down. Itâs been there since I got home. What do they think? That Carlton would be mental enough to come here? Or maybe they think Iâd go to him. Like I would, even if I knew where heâd gone. Theyâve got a helicopter, one of those ones with a searchlight, looking for him. Itâs nearly midnight and it must be keeping the whole of Wood Green awake. But I wouldnât be able to sleep even if it wasnât buzzing around. Jesus, Carlton, what the fuck have you done?
Iâm crying now. I have been on and off since I got home. I kept it together back at Carltonâs flat though. Loads more cops turned up and they ripped the place apart. His mum was hysterical. This older cop took me into the tiny kitchen. I think heâs the one in charge. I saw him when I was at the police station on Tuesday. He didnât talk to me then, but he did tonight. He asked me loads of questions. How long had I known Carlton, was he my boyfriend, where had we been all afternoon, how long had he known Kerry, how did they get on, did they have a ârelationshipâ?
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â I asked. âLike were they doing it or something?â
âIf thatâs how you choose to characterize it,â he said.
âNo, they didnât have a relationship,â I told him. âAnd he didnât kill her, right? Thatâs mad.â
The cop didnât say anything to that.
âAnyway, youâve already got the bloke who did it, havenât you?â I said.
âWeâre ruling nothing out at this stage,â he said.
âYouâve let him go, havenât you?â I said. âHe killed Kerry and youâve fucking let him go!â
He didnât say anything to that either.
So theyâve let the sick bastard go, then. That is more fucking scary than I ever want to think about. I look at the cop car. The door opens and a cop gets out. He looks up at my window. I hate the police, especially after tonight, but with that evil bastard back on the streets Iâm kind of glad heâs there now.
Keith: Itâs freezing out here, but if I spend another second in the car with Durham, I think Iâll kill her. Seriously, I will not be held responsible for my actions. COP KILLS COP. Thatâs a snappier headline than BIG BLACK DUDE WANTED FOR RAPE AND MURDER. Less fucking obvious too.
I stamp my feet and rub my hands together. It must be minus two or three, but I do not want to get back in that car. The chopper flies over again. Every cop and his uncle is out looking for him. Maybe he did it, maybe he didnât. Who fucking knows? But you know what us cops are like. When it comes to keeping society safe, weâre always going to lock up the scary black motherfucker rather than the nice middle-class white guy. Thatâs not racist. Itâs common sense.
Thatâs the only consolation of having to share a car with Durham.
