Chapter 11

On the trail, their conversation continued.

“I’ll be honest, the fact that I’m on a date is kind of a big deal,” he said. “I haven’t been in the market lately. I wasn’t...then I met you. I couldn’t imagine not seeing you again. You got under my skin.”

“That’s sweet. Has it been a while?”

“Too long. I suppose I was busy licking my wounds and pretending life was just fine. Truth be told, I’ve developed trust issues. Not really sure how to deal with them, but I’m working on it.”

“That must have been rough losing your confidence in two people at the same time.”

He nodded. “Those two people were my life. I spent all day working with my partner, and my free time with my girl. I just...I’m sorry. I told myself I wouldn’t talk about this. I’m trying to get back in the saddle, but I need to go slowly.”

She let out a small laugh of acknowledgement. “You and me, both. I don’t know why I shut down. I don’t mean to, but before I know it, I’m slamming the door shut. I almost called and canceled our date.”

He stopped walking and turned to look at her. “You did? I would have been sad. I’m glad you decided to come along.”

“Me, too. My brother talked sense into me. Truly, it’s not you. It’s just...I don’t know, maybe sometimes I feel like it’s all a game. You get drawn in, care about someone, and then they let you down and leave. I’m not so good with a broken heart. I’ve got to be at my best when I’m at work. I don’t have time to dwell. It always feels like I’m standing on the edge of the cliff wondering if the other person is about to push me off.”

Kaden reached out and took her hand. He carefully cupped it and brought it to his lips. He placed a small, tender kiss on the back of her hand. “I promise you, my intentions are not to hurt you. I’d like to get to know you a little better. I like you, Taylor.”

She looked into his piercing blue eyes. “I think I’d like that, too, but like you, I need to go slowly. Otherwise, if we move too quickly, I’ll go running away as fast as I can.”

“Should I keep a butterfly net handy?”

Her lips curled into a smile. “Maybe.”

They started walking again, this time hand-in-hand. Yeah. Maybe something could work. Maybe she was worthy. Maybe there was love waiting at the end of the road after all. There was always hope, though she had so little of it left.

After Kaden drove her home, he walked her to the door. She turned to him, anticipation building. Her skin prickled with electricity, waiting for the moment where he’d lean into her. Sure, they’d kissed quickly at the party, but under odd circumstances. They weren’t the kind of kisses she’d expected. They happened, but without feeling involved. This time, a small ember in her belly sparked.
