What Gear to Bring to a Race

In theory, you don’t have to bring much because most races will provide you with water, a hydration mixture, and race fuel. However, most races cater to faster runners, so—depending on your pace, of course—there’s always a chance you will get to a station and find it cleaned out. Furthermore, during your training season, you’ve probably become accustomed to a certain type of hydration mixture and race fuel, and nine times out of ten, the race you’re running has a different fuel or hydration mix that may mess with your stomach. Keeping this in mind, support yourself during the race by bringing your own hydration and race fuel. That’s what I usually do on race day.

What I bring to a race is similar to what I bring with me on my training runs. For 10Ks and under, I take water and a couple of race fuel packets. For half-marathons and beyond, I bring some sort of hydration pack,[*] and it’s usually filled with the following things:

My traveling pharmacy

Imodium/Pepto Bismol chewables
