Mass media are full of negativity, but not because they are a devil’s tool. They just produce what people are buying, and we are naturally inclined to look for the signs of danger. We still look for the saber toothed tigers out there, even decades after we’ve made them extinct.

Most of the negativity we perceive in the world is illusionary. For every act of violence, there are hundreds of acts of kindness, which just don’t get media coverage. Larry Evans posted his weight loss story on Facebook, and he got some offensive comments. But when he posted another video with the message, “Don’t judge me,” he got hundreds of supportive comments. This time the story made it to the media,[3] but usually such stories are anonymous and invisible.

So, indies don’t allow their fear of having their work pirated or pilloried stop them from publishing. These things happen, but they don’t prevent an indie from writing work that will connect with people they can help. They assume they write for good people who won’t lash out at the slightest irritation, and who need their help.

This viewpoint can be betrayed by the pettiness that people sometimes show. I got a negative review that criticized a book’s title and another one saying that there was “too much God” in my book for the reader’s taste (I had mentioned exactly two times that I pray, and I had recommended this activity also just two times, among half a dozen other activities).
